Hands-on Git Workshop – Advanced
This is a short and practical workshop where you’ll learn how to use Git and GitHub in small teams, simulating multi-user scenarios. We’ll learn by doing: we’ll set up, practice, and experiment together. You’ll follow short guided demos, get to try things yourself and in pairs or groups, and we’ll be there to help if you get stuck. By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to solve merge conflicts without panic and will know how to get more out of Git.
What you’ll learn
- How to use Git effectively in a multi-user project.
- How to handle merge conflicts and resolve them step by step.
- More advanced Git commands and workflows including:
- Rebasing and interactive rebasing.
- Amending commits.
- Reverting commits.
- Cherry-picking commits.
Remember to take a laptop (and a charger) with you!
Good to know
This is an advanced workshop and requires some previous experience using Git and GitHub. You should be familiar with Git basics such as creating repositories, committing, pushing to GitHub, and creating and merging branches.
We’ll be using Git from both the command line and from Visual Studio Code, so it’s good if you have basic familiarity with command line, such as navigating folders and typing commands. No coding skills required; the focus is on Git workflows and commands
The workshop will be held in English or Finnish, depending on the group’s preference.
To keep your energy up, we’ll provide a savoury snack. Just let us know about any allergies or dietary restrictions when you sign up.
Do this at home before we meet
As this is an advanced workshop, we expect you to have the necessary tools set up and ready so we can start creating merge conflicts and solving them right away. So make sure you have the following set up:
- Git installed.
- A GitHub account.
- Git connected to GitHub.
- Visual Studio Code installed (recommended), or another editor/Git GUI tool of your preference (examples will use VS Code).
IMPORTANT: Event participation is limited in number. Please cancel your registration asap if you’re unable to attend. This helps prevent food waste and additional costs, and someone in line can take your place at the event. This will help us to organise similar events in the future.
