Hands-on Git Workshop for Beginners
This is a short and practical workshop to get you comfortable with Git and GitHub. We’ll learn by doing: set up, practice, and experiment together. You’ll follow short guided demos, try things out yourself, and get help if you get stuck. By the end, you’ll have your very first repository and the skills to never lose work again.
What you’ll learn
- Why version control matters.
- Connecting Git and GitHub securely (no passwords needed).
- Single-user Git workflow – how to use Git for your own projects.
- Key Git vocabulary: repository, commit, push, pull, branch.
- Two ways to use Git: the command line and VS Code.
Remember to take a laptop (and a charger) with you!
Good to know
New to Git? No worries – no previous experience required! You don’t need any coding skills either. If you know how to open folders and save files, you’re all set. Some familiarity with the command line can be helpful, but it’s absolutely not essential.
The workshop will be held in English or Finnish, depending on the group’s preference.
To keep your energy up, we’ll provide a savoury snack. Just let us know about any allergies or dietary restrictions when you sign up.
Do this at home before we meet
We ask you to do (or at least try) some setup things before the workshop, this will help us get started with the workshop smoother. However, don’t worry if you don’t manage do to everything, we’ll sort it out together during the workshop.
There will also be a possibility to get help via Slack before the workshop (more info about this in the enrollment message).
- Familiarise yourself with command line if you’re a newbie.
- Install Git.
- Create a GitHub account.
- Install Visual Studio Code (or your preferred editor, demos will use VS Code).
- Optional: Check out how to create SSH key.
You’ll get links to guiding materials for setup and more info via enrolment confirmation message and event reminder emails.
IMPORTANT: Event participation is limited in number. Please cancel your registration asap if you’re unable to attend. This helps prevent food waste and additional costs, and someone in line can take your place at the event. This will help us to organise similar events in the future.
